The monarch instructed him to immediately resume budget negotiations.
King Philippe of Belgium met with Prime Minister Bart De Wever on Friday, November 6. He did not approve the prime minister’s resignation and instructed him to immediately resume budget negotiations.
This was reported by Le Soir.
“His Majesty the King received Prime Minister Bart De Wever in audience at the Royal Palace. Following meetings with the leaders of the five coalition parties, the King took note of each party’s desire to conclude budget negotiations as soon as possible. All of them reaffirmed their determination to reach an agreement on a sound budgetary course for the next three years,” the Royal Palace stated.
The monarch also received official assurances from the leaders of the five parties that their political forces are prepared to make concessions in order to reach consensus within the government.
The King emphasized the need to strike the right balance between preserving social cohesion and stimulating economic growth. Each leader pledged to uphold a spirit of compromise and responsibility to achieve this goal.
Based on these conclusions, Philippe decided not to accept Bart De Wever’s resignation and instructed him to immediately resume budget negotiations. The prime minister will report to the king again on November 16.
The head of government resigned on November 2 because his team was unable to reach an agreement on budget measures totaling €10 billion. However, the king postponed his decision and has been consulting with the leaders of the coalition parties in recent days.
