Before being sent to war, he also served in the Special Forces of the Internal Troops of Belarus.

The channel of the Russian reconnaissance battalion "Razvedosy" reported the death of its fighter named Matvey with the call sign Pups. The surname was not specified, but it was established by "Flagstaff" and found out that the deceased was a hockey player from Gomel.

The mercenary was only 21 years old and was survived by his mother, younger sister and brother. According to the intelligence battalion's channel, Matvey served in a reconnaissance group. On February 4, she "performed the task of identifying hiding places and mopping up enemy dugouts." At that time, the group was attacked by attack FPV drones.

It is stated that "the raid of enemy UAVs was repulsed, but the group suffered losses with wounded soldiers." While evacuating the wounded, who were accompanied by Matvey, a second raid was carried out. The battalion said that the fighter was covering the group and shot down the drones with a smoothbore weapon, but one of the downed UAVs fell nearby and detonated - the injuries were incompatible with life. Matvei was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage.

At about the same time the "tragic death" of his player was reported by the hockey team "Slavs", which plays in the amateur hockey league in Homel. The circumstances of the death were not specified, but the name and surname of the deceased - Matvei Ugarov. He was a goalkeeper in the team.

The photos from the guy's personal page are similar to those published by the reconnaissance battalion. Photo search services did not give out profiles by the photo, and there is no Gomel resident in the public lists of Belarusian mercenaries, which were posted by Ukrainian sources.

But a source confirmed to Flagstaff that the deceased was exactly Matvei Ugarov, who lived in Gomel and played in an amateur team. He was also a referee who worked at matches of children's teams in Gomel. Recently he was noticed in Gomel Ice Palace wearing a military jacket with a glued chevron.

In the comments in TG in the news about Matvei's death someone wrote "Belarus remembers", relatives of the deceased also came to the comments. Their words are reeking with hatred for Ukrainians, who are called "Bandera-ers" and called to "wipe them off the face of the earth." The sister of the deceased even used foul language and said that her brother was killed on the day of her 17th birthday and that he was her only support and promised to return alive. Both called for violent revenge for the dead relative.

At the same time, grandmother Galina Tkacheva appealed to the commanders to "answer for everything."

"To send untrained young people to the scorcher, knowing that they will not return... Even when Afghanistan was, young boys were trained for six months, how to hold on and to survive, and you untrained and not fired upon to certain death..."

It is possible that Matvey's decision to go to war was influenced by his "upbringing" in the Slavs hockey team. Its logo contains a kolovrat, an ancient solar symbol that later became the basis for the Nazi swastika. Now the symbol is used by neo-pagans and neo-Nazis, while law enforcers restrict its use. In one photo on the team's publick, it is captured under the slogan "For Belarus," which is one of the slogans of the Belarusian regime.

Ugarov's personal page shows that he was fond of strikeball and in 2025 participated in the paramilitary "Battle of the Cities" in Bobruisk. That same year he last posted a photo of himself in a hockey uniform. According to Cyberpartisans, from 2023 to 2024 Ugarov served in Minsk special forces - in VCh 3214 (a unit of internal troops).
