A likely scenario for the fighting has been revealed.
Germany's KSK special forces have revised their training program in anticipation of a possible conflict with Russia. The troops are training to operate in the field for extended periods and to confront an enemy equipped with tanks, artillery, and drones.
According to Bild, the KSK has changed its training program and operational tactics. Whereas special operations were previously planned to last about three days, the troops are now preparing to remain in the field for longer periods.
They explicitly named Russia as the enemy the unit is targeting. “We are very specifically focused on Russia as our adversary,” stated the KSK commander.
During exercises, special forces troops practice countering an adversary that uses tanks, artillery, drones, and electronic warfare systems.
The troops also train to operate in extremely low temperatures. Such conditions are typical of NATO’s eastern flank.
What is known about the KSK special forces
The KSK unit is based at the Zeppelin Barracks in the town of Calw, near Stuttgart. The unit has a total strength of about 1,500 personnel. However, special forces operatives make up only one-third of the personnel; the rest are administrative staff. Selection for the unit is very rigorous. Only about 15% of candidates successfully pass the selection process.
