The chairman of the Bundestag wants to see a woman as president of the Federal Republic of Germany.
A successor to Frank-Walter Steinmeier as president of the Federal Republic of Germany will be elected on January 30, 2027. The Bundestag said Thursday, February 26, that its chairwoman Julia Klöckner has set a date for the Federal Assembly to meet and informed the Council of Elders, reports DW.
"On that day, the Federal Assembly will meet in the German Bundestag and elect the future or incoming federal president," the report said.
Steinmeier's term of office expires on March 18, 2027. He cannot run again as he has already been elected to the state's highest office twice. The federal assembly must hold a vote at least 30 days before the term expires.
Merz wants the coalition to nominate a common candidate
French Chancellor Friedrich Merz said earlier that a decision on a common candidate for the highest state office from the coalition would be taken after elections for the state parliaments in the fall of 2026. Merz (Christian Democratic Union) wants to submit a proposal to the Federal Assembly together with Christian Social Union chairman Markus Söder and German Social Democratic Party co-chairmen Berbel Bas and Lars Klingbeil.
A woman for the presidency of the Federal Republic of Germany?
Bundestag Speaker Julia Klöckner on February 1 reiterated the need for a woman to be elected as head of state in the Federal Republic of Germany. "It is quite surprising that in all these years there has never yet been a woman in the Bellevue Palace (the residence of the president of the FRG. - Ed.)," she noted.
The politician had already expressed this thought in November 2025. On the air of n-tv channel, she drew attention to the fact that the history of the FRG was made by twelve male presidents. "I would say the time has come," the parliamentary speaker said at the time.
Friedrich Merz is in solidarity with the position of his party colleague. Back in August 2025, he said at a government open day in Berlin that he "very well imagines" how in 2027 the Federal Assembly will elect a woman to the highest state office for the first time in the history of the republic. "That would be good," the prime minister added.
The Federal Assembly, convened solely to elect a new president, is made up of one half of all Bundestag members and the other half of electors chosen by the parliaments (Landtags) of the 16 federal states. Moreover, these can be not only members of the Landtags themselves, but also communal politicians, prominent public figures, artists or scientists.
