Bloomberg: Trump No Longer Believes Russia Will Win On The Battlefield
DONALD TRUMP

The U.S. president has revised his assessment of the war in Ukraine.

U.S. President Donald Trump has revised his assessment of the war in Ukraine: according to sources Bloomberg, a consensus has now emerged among his inner circle and among G7 leaders that Russia will not be able to achieve victory on the battlefield. This marks a significant shift from Trump’s position following his meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska in August 2025, when he believed that Ukraine had “no trump cards” and should make territorial concessions. Now, according to a G7 representative speaking on condition of anonymity, the U.S. and its European allies agree that Kyiv’s position is strengthening.

This shift became evident at the G7 summit in Evian, France, where President Emmanuel Macron arranged brief talks between Trump and Zelenskyy, the agency’s source said. According to the source, during the conversation, Zelenskyy showed Trump photographs of Kyiv’s Uspensky Cathedral, which had been damaged by a Russian strike, and this made an impression on Trump.

“Russia should make a deal,” Trump said during a meeting with the Emir of Qatar. “This whole thing is just ridiculous. So yes, I’ll do everything in my power.” His remarks did not include his previous demands that Zelenskyy surrender. Furthermore, as Bloomberg notes, in a conversation with the leader of the UAE, Trump indicated that he is open to strengthening sanctions against Moscow, especially as the war with Iran comes to an end. “We’ll be able to do that because oil is now flowing,” he said.

In an interview with Times Radio, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer linked the shift in rhetoric to the deteriorating state of the Russian economy. “The Russian economy has been hit hard, and this has created a different atmosphere in Moscow,” Starmer explained. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, for his part, stated during a meeting with Zelenskyy: “The situation in this war is changing, and that’s part of what we’ve just been discussing. Today we see unity within the G7.”

According to Bloomberg, Macron invited Zelenskyy to stay in Evian until the end of the summit so that he could hold more meetings and continue his dialogue with Trump.
