The country's foreign minister is canceling his visit to the United States.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed outrage over statements by U.S. President Donald Trump claiming that she had allegedly begged the White House chief for a joint photo at the G7 summit.
This was reported by the ANSA news agency.
Meloni’s strong reaction was triggered by an interview Trump gave to the Italian television channel La7. In it, he asks the journalist about the prime minister and then recounts how she begged him to take a photo with her at the G7 summit in Eviana.
“She’s probably glad I spoke with her. I didn’t have to talk to her… She begged me to take a photo with her! She wanted so badly to take a photo with me. I wouldn’t have done it, but I felt sorry for her,” the U.S. president claimed.
Meloni posted a statement on her social media accounts refuting Trump’s claims. She expressed outrage at the U.S. president’s comments and his attitude toward allies.
“Donald Trump’s statements are completely fabricated. I am, quite frankly, shocked. I don’t know why the President of the United States behaves this way toward his allies—and this isn’t the first time,” Meloni said in a video message.
The prime minister expressed regret that the U.S. president does not show the same resolve toward the enemies of the United States.
“I can only say that it is disappointing that he does not show the same resolve toward the enemies of the West and the United States, whose leaders he, on the contrary, treats with much greater leniency. There is one thing he must remember: neither I nor Italy ever beg,” Meloni emphasized.
Trump’s comments directed at Meloni outraged other Italian officials. In light of the scandal, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani canceled his visit to the United States, scheduled for June 21 and 22. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto called this another “blunder” by Trump.
“I cannot imagine Giorgia Meloni asking anyone to take a photo with her, even under duress. But I can imagine how much effort it took her to set aside what Trump said a few weeks ago, for the sake of Italy, Europe, and the West. And I can imagine how much it will cost her not to comment, as this new blunder by the U.S. president deserves,” said Crozetto.
The incident came to light after Italian media drew attention to the warming of relations between the leaders of Italy and the U.S.
In the spring, a controversy arose between Meloni and the U.S. president due to Trump’s sharp criticism of Pope Leo XIV’s repeated calls for peace in the Middle East. Meloni called the U.S. leader’s remarks unacceptable.
Trump subsequently accused her of lacking courage and stated that relations between them were no longer what they used to be.
