Satellite images show that one-fifth of the Sadovod market was destroyed in the largest attack by Ukrainian drones on Moscow on June 18, according to Planet Lab, published by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
The mayor of the capital Sergey Sobyanin claimed that “debris from downed drones” had fallen on the site, causing “minor damage” to “one of the buildings.” On the day of the attack, shop owners reported that the fire had destroyed 500 stalls: “There’s practically no merchandise left. The seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh… many rows burned down.” It took nearly a day to extinguish the fire at the market, and it was closed for the weekend of June 20–21 under the pretext of holding “sanitation days and a community cleanup.”
The “Sadovod” press office told Msk1 that the damage has not yet been assessed, and it is unclear whether vendors will receive compensation. The market is owned by Azerbaijani businessmen Godu Nisanov and Zarakh Iliev—co-owners of the “Kievskaya Ploshchad” group of companies, one of the largest commercial real estate operators in the Russian Federation. Both are among Russia’s top billionaires: each is estimated to be worth $5.1 billion. These are the same entrepreneurs who were previously co-owners of the Cherkizovsky Market.
