The Hungarian foreign minister called Lavrov while the head of the "Wagner" Group was marching on Moscow.
During the rebellion led by the head of the private military company "Wagner" Yevgeny Prigozhin in June 2023, the then-Foreign Minister of Hungary, Péter Szijjártó, called Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to offer his personal assistance. This was reported on June 23 by investigative journalists VSquare.
The journalists published a transcript of the diplomats’ conversation, which took place on June 24, 2023.
In it, Szijjártó expressed concern: “Good afternoon, I just wanted to check if everything is under control and if you’re all right.” In response, Lavrov assured the Hungarian minister that the situation was under the control of security forces and emphasized that Putin had not flown anywhere and remained in Moscow. The Hungarian official called the Russian foreign minister after rumors surfaced about Putin’s possible departure for St. Petersburg.
When Szijjártó offered assistance if needed, Lavrov replied ironically: “I don’t need anything. No problem. Thanks for calling.”
