As part of the exchange, he was handed over to Belarus.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu signed a decree stripping former Deputy Director of the Information and Security Service (SIS) Alexandru Balan of his Moldovan citizenship.

This was reported by Newsmaker.

Balan, who was convicted of disclosing state secrets, left the country in May of this year as part of an exchange for two SIS officers who had been arrested in Russia.

As a reminder, on April 28, two officers of the Moldovan Information and Security Service (SIS), who had been detained in Russia, were released as part of the exchange. In exchange, Moldovan authorities handed over former SIS Deputy Director Alexandru Balan, who had been convicted of disclosing state secrets. He was pardoned so that he could travel to Belarus.

Balan had previously been extradited from Romania to Moldova, where he was to serve approximately 1.5 years in prison.

As part of the exchange, Poland returned Andrzej Poczobut, a journalist and activist in the Polish community in Belarus, and handed over to Russia Alexander Butyagin, an archaeologist whose extradition had been requested by Ukraine.
