The EU will get gas from Nigeria instead of Russian gas.

Nigeria, Niger and Algeria are promoting the construction of a 4128 km long gas pipeline, which will be able to supply up to 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Europe annually as an alternative to Russian energy resources. This is reported by Business Insider Africa.

The construction of the Trans-Sahara gas pipeline has begun in Algeria, with work on the Niger section expected to start in 2027. The pipeline aims to transport Nigerian gas through Niger to Algeria, where it will connect to existing infrastructure to reach European markets.

Plans for the Trans-Sahara pipeline were first proposed in the 1970s, resumed periodically in the early 2000s, but then stalled.

The project was restarted amid strong global demand for gas and oil, and soaring prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Originally estimated to cost $10 billion, the pipeline has since increased in value and is now variously estimated to cost between $13 billion and $19.5 billion.

The project will provide Nigeria with a new route to European markets, complementing the already exported offshore transportation of liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as strengthening Niger's role as a transit country and boosting Algeria's position as a major supplier to Europe.

Algeria already provides about 12% of gas imports to the European Union, allowing it to have the infrastructure to transport Nigerian gas to market.

Another regional project to transport gas to Europe has also advanced in recent months. Morocco's state-owned company is considering raising funds to build a pipeline that would connect fields in Nigeria, Senegal and Mauritania to ten neighboring African countries.

In contrast to the shorter route across the Sahara, the Nigeria-Morocco pipeline would follow the Atlantic coast before reaching Morocco. The pipeline is planned to be connected to the Maghreb-Europe pipeline, which connects Morocco to Spain.
