Lithuania Announces Transition To Universal Military Conscription

The country will increase the number of conscripts.

Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas said the country is moving toward introducing universal conscription amid drone incidents.

This is reported by LRT.

The defense minister said Lithuania must prepare for an increase in the number of conscripts as the country is moving "at a good pace" toward introducing compulsory military service.

"We need to prepare - we need infrastructure and trainers, we need military capabilities, and we need to have enough of the same weapons to equip the people we have conscripted... Every year the army has the ability to train more and more people, so we are moving towards universal conscription, but we are moving at a good pace, maintaining quality," Kaunas said.

Prime Minister Inga Ruginenė agreed that the number of conscripts should be increased.

"Seeing the changing geopolitical situation and the approach of new threats, the priority today is to fulfill the main tasks and move step by step towards expansion," she said.

Laurynas Kasciunas, leader of the opposition party Fatherland Union - Lithuanian Christian Democrats, Laurynas Kasciunas, also spoke in favor of increasing the number of conscripts.

"Sometimes we take these constants and the number of conscripts is increased in a limited way. I am in favor of a more rapid increase in the number of conscripts," Kasciunas said.

The list of conscripts in Lithuania currently includes young men between the ages of 18 and 21. Military service can be postponed due to studies, health or family circumstances. Those who evade service can be held both administratively and criminally liable.

This year, five thousand young men in Lithuania will undergo compulsory military service, while another three thousand will volunteer.
