In Russia, Companies Have Begun Shifting Employees To Remote Work To Save On Fuel

The fuel crisis is escalating.

The government of the Novosibirsk Region, where a a state of heightened readiness due to the fuel crisis has been in effect since July 8, has recommended that all employers in the region—unless they operate in critical sectors—switch their employees to remote work and reduce fuel consumption. This is stated in a government decree cited by "Siberian Express". Authorities also urged local residents to limit travel within the region by private car and, if they do travel, to ensure they have enough fuel for a round trip. In late June, the sale of fuel to individuals was suspended at a number of gas stations in the Novosibirsk Region.

“To recommend that organizations—regardless of ownership structure—not involved in providing essential services to the population switch their employees to remote work and reduce fuel consumption in order to lower overall fuel usage, while ensuring that social and economic processes and legal requirements are not disrupted,” — states the decree signed by the acting governor of the Novosibirsk Region Konstantin Khalzov. It is noted that these recommendations will remain in effect until the state of heightened readiness is lifted.

On Monday, the Novosibirsk Region—where a drone threat was in effect for the first time since the start of the war—announced the introduction of a heightened alert status due to a fuel shortage, according to the regional government’s press service.

Authorities have also tightened fuel purchase limits at gas stations. Customers are now allowed to purchase up to 30 liters of gasoline and 60 liters of diesel fuel per person. Since late June, other limits had been in place: up to 40 and 80 liters, respectively; and no more than 200 liters of diesel fuel on highways. For emergency services, utility services, and public transportation, the “priority refueling” policy remains in effect at the Gazprom Neft network.
