The Alliance is adapting its capabilities to new threats.

Following the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey announced the start of a new phase in the North Atlantic Alliance’s development. Officials there believe that the decisions made will have long-term effects.

This was reported by Hürriyet Daily News.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called the NATO summit in Ankara historic in terms of both its organization and its results. According to him, the allies managed to reach a consensus despite global instability and strategic differences.

Fidan said the summit reaffirmed NATO’s relevance and demonstrated that member countries are capable of finding common solutions even under complex geopolitical conditions.

According to the minister, one of the most important outcomes of the meeting was the transformation of the principle of sharing defense expenditures among allies—previously a political concept—into practical policy.

He noted that the United States has long called on European countries to assume a greater share of responsibility for their own security, and this position has now gained the support of the entire Alliance.

“In fact, this was a rediscovery of NATO’s original role, which was not offensive but was based primarily on defense, peacekeeping, and the promotion of prosperity and stability,” emphasized the head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

The Transition to “NATO 3.0”

That is precisely why, according to Fidan, the Defense Industry Forum held during the summit and the political framework agreement adopted in Ankara were of great importance.

He emphasized that NATO is now entering a new phase of development, which he called “NATO 3.0.” According to him, the new model involves adapting military capabilities and the defense-industrial base to modern threats, as well as strengthening the resilience of logistics, arms production, and supply chains.

“Amid such geostrategic and global upheavals, confusion, divergent views, and conflicting strategic goals, the fact that member states have come together and reached a consensus on certain concepts and objectives is a historic success,” the minister added.

He noted that defense contracts between allies totaling approximately $50 billion were announced during the summit.

According to him, these include not only agreements with Turkey but also joint projects among NATO member states, which are intended to strengthen the Alliance’s defense capabilities.
