Amid the escalation, Washington and Tehran continue to make conflicting statements about the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. While the U.S. claims that shipping continues as usual, Iran insists that it has taken control of the waterway.
According to Reuters, Tehran intends to establish a permanent system for collecting fees from ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passed before the war began. In addition, Iranian authorities have warned that ships are prohibited from entering the strait without special permission.
Late Saturday evening, Iran announced the closure of the strait after firing a warning shot at a vessel that, according to Tehran, was traveling on an unauthorized route. As early as Sunday, Iranian officials reported that a second vessel had been disabled.
Meanwhile, India reported that one of its citizens was missing after an attack on the container ship GFS Galaxy off the coast of Oman. Omani authorities stated that they had managed to rescue 23 crew members. Against this backdrop, Qatar advised all vessels, including pleasure craft, fishing boats, and jet skis, to temporarily refrain from going out to sea.
The United States emphasized that the U.S. military is prepared to ensure freedom of navigation, despite what Washington described as “aggression, harassment, threats, and arbitrary statements” from Iran.
“Iran does not control the strait. Shipping continues,” the U.S. statement said.
Earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei stated that revenge for his father’s assassination is “inevitable.” This was his first public statement since his father’s funeral, which he did not attend.
