Zelenskyy's team revealed that this will strengthen the U.S. position on Ukraine.

U.S. President Donald Trump is showing an increasingly favorable attitude toward Ukraine, and Kyiv’s continued successes on the battlefield can only strengthen U.S. support. This was stated by the economic adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Chrystia Freeland, in an interview with ABC News.

According to her, one of the key outcomes of the recent NATO summit was an agreement to grant Ukraine a license to manufacture interceptor missiles for Patriot systems.

Freeland called this U.S. decision “truly good news” for Ukraine, but clarified that the license does not solve the problem immediately: it will take time between obtaining the manufacturing rights and the actual production of the missiles, whereas Ukraine is already in dire need of additional air defense systems and ammunition to protect itself against Russian strikes.

Zelenskyy himself, following talks with Trump, reported that the parties had reached an “important agreement” on licensing the production of Patriot systems and that working groups are already implementing these agreements.

“Trump really does love winners”

Commenting on the shift in the U.S. president’s rhetoric, Freeland emphasized that the Ukrainian leadership is not seeking to showcase its successes solely to please Washington.

“Ukrainians aren’t fighting to put on a show for Trump. They’re fighting because otherwise they’ll die,” she said.

At the same time, Zelenskyy’s adviser is confident that Ukraine’s military successes directly influence the level of support from the U.S. president: “Trump really does love winners. He’s not averse to changing his position. And I truly believe that the stronger the Ukrainians are, the better our chances of gaining his support.”
NATO Confirms Long-Term Support
Following the NATO summit, the allies reaffirmed their intention to continue supporting Ukraine. The final declaration notes Kyiv’s significant contribution to transatlantic security, and the total amount of aid from the allies in 2026 is expected to reach about $80 billion. Funding is expected to remain at the same level in 2027.

Freeland also noted that European allies have demonstrated a willingness to support Ukraine for as long as necessary.

Ukraine is increasingly relying on its own weapons

Separately, Zelenskyy’s advisor highlighted the development of Ukraine’s defense-industrial complex. According to her, Ukraine is producing more and more long-range weapons on its own, which allows it to use them without having to coordinate strikes with partners.

In Freeland’s view, this has been one of the factors behind the successful strikes on Russia’s military and energy infrastructure.

Peace talks remain a distant prospect

Despite positive signals of support for Ukraine, the prospects for ending the war remain uncertain. According to Freeland, Russia continues to make demands that are unacceptable to Kyiv, and Vladimir Putin refuses to engage in direct talks with Zelenskyy.

At the same time, in her view, predictions that Ukraine would soon be exhausted have not come true.

“Ukraine’s success so far shows us that if we provide it with the necessary tools, it will see this through to the end,” Freeland concluded.
