Russia Has Banned Nighttime Shipping In Novorossiysk

Due to attacks by Ukrainian drones.

Russia has imposed a temporary ban on ships entering and leaving the port of Novorossiysk in the Krasnodar Krai from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. due to attacks by Ukrainian drones. This was reported on Wednesday, July 22, by Reuters, citing three sources in the grain industry.

The sources said the order was given verbally and that no official document had been sent to shippers. According to the sources, the port is operating as usual except during nighttime hours, and grain shipments have not been affected.

The Russian Ministry of Transport and the port administration did not respond to a request for comment.

Novorossiysk is Russia’s largest port in terms of cargo turnover, handling up to one-third of Russia’s grain exports.

Russia suspended shipping through the Kerch Strait and along the Azov-Don Canal following strikes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on tankers in the Sea of Azov, Reuters reported on July 11.

In an order dated July 17, the Russian Ministry of Transport prohibited vessels from anchoring in areas not protected by air defense systems near the seaports of Azov in the Sea of Azov and Kavkaz in the Kerch Strait.

Novorossiysk is a likely destination for grain intended for export and being rerouted from the Sea of Azov. Oil, metals, and containerized cargo are also shipped from there.

Wheat futures on the Euronext exchange for September delivery rose 4.5% amid news of the nighttime curfew.
