On the evening of July 4, during the U.S. Independence Day celebrations, a fire broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City due to a fireworks show, according to The New York Times.

The fire broke out on the pedestrian section of the bridge, where the festive fireworks were being set off at the time. According to police, the fire was reported at 9:32 p.m. Rescue workers arrived at the scene and had completely extinguished the fire by shortly after 10:00 p.m.

Police stated that the fire was “most likely” caused by fireworks; there were no reports of injuries.

A New York Times photographer captured flames at at least four different spots on the bridge. After the fireworks show ended, a fire truck was spotted in the central part of the structure. Traffic on the bridge remained completely closed to both vehicles and pedestrians until late in the evening.

Eyewitnesses watching the fireworks from the waterfront initially couldn’t tell whether the blaze was part of the festive show or a real fire.

“It’s perfectly obvious that for New Yorkers, this wasn’t part of the show. This is unusual; the situation got out of control,” said one of the spectators.

On July 4, the United States celebrated the 250th anniversary of its independence. On this day in 1776, the 13 colonies of North America adopted the Declaration of Independence from the British Empire.

The celebration in Washington, D.C., saw significant changes to the program due to extreme weather conditions. The event organizers had planned to set a new world record for the scale of the fireworks display, announcing the launch of 850,000 fireworks on the National Mall.

However, the extreme heat forced the U.S. National Park Service to completely cancel the traditional Independence Day National Parade for the safety of participants and visitors.
