Emmanuel Macron will hold talks with his Syrian counterpart, Ahmed al-Sharaa.

French President Emmanuel Macron will pay an official visit to Syria and hold talks with his Syrian counterpart Ahmed al-Sharaa. This was reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), citing a statement from the president’s office.

The parties will discuss strengthening bilateral relations, as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest, according to the report. President Macron will be accompanied by a delegation of investors and representatives of French companies. The leaders of Syria and France plan to hold a roundtable discussion with delegations from both countries.

Sources at Al Hadath reported that the first session of the Syrian People’s Assembly, formed this week, was postponed due to the overlap with Macron’s visit. The session had been scheduled for tomorrow.

The French president’s last visit to Syria took place in 2009—at that time, Nicolas Sarkozy visited the country. Emmanuel Macron will be the first Western leader to make an official visit to Syria following the change in government at the end of 2024. In May 2025, President al-Sharaa visited France as part of his first official visit to Europe.
