They pay a high price for every kilometer.
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance stated that the Russians are currently in a situation where their offensive operations are not yielding significant success. Russian troops are paying a high price for minimal gains.
He made this statement in an interview The Sunday Times.
Vance noted that, upon analyzing the war between Russia and Ukraine, he immediately saw what he considered to be obvious: given the proliferation of drones and surveillance technology, it would have been more prudent for Ukraine to consolidate its positions and wear down Russia, rather than launch costly offensive operations aimed at recapturing occupied territories.
“If we look back at the summer of 2023, the main point of contention at the time was whether Ukraine should attempt a large-scale counteroffensive. Virtually the entire Western world, including President Biden, pressured the Ukrainians to launch a large-scale counteroffensive, which, as it turned out later, became a strategic and tactical disaster,” said the U.S. vice president.
According to him, the Trump administration believes that Ukraine should focus as much as possible on defense while simultaneously conducting negotiations.
“This approach has been far more successful, since it is easier to be on the defensive than on the offensive. This has allowed the Ukrainians to make slightly better use of their tactical advantage. To be honest, the Russians are now in a situation where what they can achieve through prolonged offensive operations is negligible—and approaching zero. This may well create the space we need to see this through to the end,” Vance said.
The politician emphasized that the Russians are paying dearly for every square kilometer they capture. According to Vance, this was the result of the U.S. and NATO encouraging Ukraine to shift its strategy toward effective defense.
