World Cup: Switzerland Defeats Colombia

World Cup: Switzerland Defeats Colombia

The match was decided by a penalty shootout.

The Swiss national team defeated Colombia in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Both teams started the game cautiously and created very few scoring chances in the first half. The goalkeepers—Gregor Kobel and Camilo Vargas—handled the few threats with confidence.

Early in the second half, Switzerland had an excellent opportunity to open the scoring: Sou and Rieder orchestrated a promising attack, but the ball went wide of the post. The Swiss continued to try to build plays in front of their opponent’s goal, but they failed to create any real scoring chances. Colombia was also unable to create any real danger. As a result, the game predictably went into extra time.

In extra time, both teams opened up. Colombia came within a hair of scoring on a shot by Lukumi, but the ball hit the crossbar. Switzerland responded with a chance by Amdouni, but the forward was unable to beat the goalkeeper. In the end, the winner had to be decided in a penalty shootout.

In the penalty shootout, the Swiss national team proved to be more accurate. Colombian defender Davidson Sánchez hit the crossbar, and Kucho Hernández’s shot was saved by Gregor Kobel. In the end, the Swiss won 4–3.

Switzerland will face Argentina in the quarterfinals.
