In the city of Nizhnekamsk, located in the Russian region of Tatarstan, on the night of Wednesday, July 8, explosions were heard. Local residents are reporting a fire and smoke over the city, according to the Telegram channel Astra.
Monitoring channels report that the “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” petrochemical plant was likely struck by drones. Footage posted online shows several fire hotspots.
An advisor to Ukraine’s Minister of Defense Sergey Sternenko also reports that “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” has been hit; the fire there is visible even from neighboring cities.
This is one of Russia’s largest petrochemical plants, producing synthetic rubber, which is a critically important component for the Russian military-industrial complex.
The city of Nizhnekamsk is located approximately 1,200 km from Ukraine.
