He was found guilty of mass murder, torture, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.

A court in Damascus has sentenced Wassim al-Assad—the cousin of Syria’s ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad—to death. He was found guilty of a series of mass murders, torture, as well as crimes against humanity and war crimes. This was reported on August 18 by France24 on August 18.

According to the investigation, during the civil war, Wasim al-Assad formed two armed groups that carried out bloody massacres in the vicinity of the Syrian capital. In addition, he was convicted of inciting sectarian strife and unlawful deprivation of liberty.

At the same time, the charge of drug smuggling was dropped due to lack of evidence.

He was detained during a special operation on the Syrian-Lebanese border. Although he did not hold any official government positions, he was considered an influential figure: in 2023, the U.S. imposed sanctions against him for leading paramilitary groups and participating in regional drug trafficking.

Al-Assad’s sentence marked the first in-person court ruling of this magnitude. A week earlier, a Syrian court had sentenced Bashar al-Assad—who fled to Russia in December 2024—as well as his brother Maher and several high-ranking military officials of the former regime to death in absentia.
