It concerns oil.
According to President Donald Trump, the U.S. has reached an agreement with Venezuela regarding control over more than 65 billion barrels of its proven oil reserves, reports BBC.
“This historic deal MORE THAN DOUBLES U.S. oil reserves, significantly expands our oil supply, and will substantially lower gas prices for all Americans,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.
Following the arrest of former Venezuelan dictator Nicholas Maduro earlier this year, Trump promised to use Venezuela’s oil reserves—the largest in the world. Recently, he has been under pressure to lower domestic gasoline prices.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the deal “a huge victory for both the American and Venezuelan people.” Details of the deal have not yet been disclosed.
“For the Venezuelan people, this deal will attract nearly $100 billion in private investment, support thousands of high-paying jobs, and help rebuild Venezuela’s economy,” Rubio wrote on social media.
In his statement, Trump said that Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegset had reached an agreement with Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodríguez “as part of a partnership with the private sector.”
He did not go into details about the partnership or describe any potential obligations or conditions for the U.S. under the deal, but said the agreement was reached “at no cost to American taxpayers.”
Rodríguez, who has not yet publicly commented on this statement, granted a private joint venture a 100-year concession to develop oil fields with reserves of 63 billion barrels of oil, a U.S. official told CBS, the BBC’s media partner in the United States.
