Attention is focused on Germany and Chancellor Merz.
Hans von der Burhard , a well-known German political journalist and senior political correspondent covering the German Chancellery as part of the team at the authoritative publication Politico , predicts a “thrilling week,” commenting on the German government’s plans, led by Friedrich Merz, to publicly accuse Russia of planning a terrorist attack at Leipzig Airport and impose new sanctions against the Kremlin.
The columnist wrote about this in X in a comment on a link to an article by Welt am Sonntag and Politico, which details the German chancellor’s aforementioned plans.
“Enjoy the beautiful weather and the silence outside your window. We’re in for a truly exciting week, both domestically and in foreign policy,” the journalist wrote.
He also commented on the reaction of U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, who praised Merz for his intentions and called on the U.S. and its allies to take decisive action against the Kremlin.
“A U.S. senator was the first to react to our reports and congratulated Mertz. Of course, the chancellor must first voice the accusation against Russia and explain the consequences in detail. But the expectation is clear: the sanctions must be ‘tough,’” the columnist wrote.
It is also worth noting that information about the Merz government’s plans emerged against the backdrop of a recent visit to Moscow by CIA Director John Ratcliffe. Media reports suggested that one of the purposes of this trip may have been to warn the Kremlin against acts of sabotage on European soil.
