Was Trump A "Russian Agent"? FBI Investigation Materials Released

The White House has released declassified documents.

In 2017, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) secretly launched an investigation into the incumbent U.S. President Donald Trump regarding his possible ties to Russia.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing a White House statement.

The White House has released previously classified FBI documents related to a criminal investigation opened against Donald Trump in May 2017.

At that time, investigators were examining the theory that the U.S. president might have been acting in Russia’s interests. The investigation was triggered by the FBI director’s dismissal of James Comey.

The released internal documents indicate that the investigation, codenamed “Oxford Comma,” was launched shortly after Comey’s resignation. At the same time, the documents indicate that a significant portion of FBI agents did not support the assumption that served as the basis for the investigative actions.

A document dated May 16, 2017, states that the FBI launched a full-scale investigation based on a reasonable suspicion that Trump may have acted, either knowingly or unknowingly, in the interests of the Government of the Russian Federation. Investigators also suspected that such actions could pose a threat to U.S. national security or violate federal law.

The documents also indicate that the investigation was launched even though, at that time, law enforcement had no evidence of collusion between Russia and Trump’s campaign team during the 2016 election campaign.

Subsequently, Special Counsel John Durham, in a report released by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2023, concluded that the FBI did not have sufficient grounds even to open the initial “Crossfire Hurricane” investigation into the Trump campaign’s alleged ties to Russia.

The “Oxferd Comma” case was closed on April 9, 2019, as the investigation found no evidence that Trump had ties to Russia.

As a reminder, it also came to light that a conflict arose between Trump and Hegset over the missile shortage in the U.S.
