Lukashenko Spoke Out Against Jamón

The governor criticized Topouzidis.

Lukashenko once again criticized retail chains, accusing them of not paying enough attention to the sale of Belarusian goods and threatening to conduct inspections. He made these remarks at a meeting in the Vileika District, where the owner of the “Korona” chain Pavel Topuzidis was present.

According to Lukashenko, rural residents do not need imported delicacies but expect stores to carry a basic selection of fresh, domestically produced goods.

“People don’t need Spanish jamón. They need ordinary meat, dairy products, and decent bread. Belarusian products—what we produce—is what should be available. Period!” he declared.

Minister of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade Artur Karpovich reported that over the past year, retail chains and manufacturers have signed about a thousand agreements aimed at increasing the share of Belarusian products on store shelves.

However, according to the State Control Committee, many retailers have complied with these agreements only in name, retaining a significant assortment of imported goods.

In response, Lukashenko instructed his administration and the State Control Committee to conduct an audit of retail chains, making it clear that measures would follow if violations were discovered.

“This must be the final warning. I am warning all of you and the heads of these retail chains,” he said.
