The Kremlin Is Threatening To Aim Nuclear Warheads At Lithuania

Peskov reacted nervously to Vilnius's decision.

Lithuania will find itself in the crosshairs of Russian nuclear weapons if the country’s authorities decide to deploy nuclear warheads on its territory. This was stated by Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov.

“This would be a very serious escalation of tensions, because if you deploy nuclear weapons on your territory, they are aimed at someone. Obviously, these weapons will not be aimed at the West. They will be aimed at the East—that is, at us,” Peskov said.

He noted that such a turn of events could have been predicted in advance.

Earlier, the Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas Juozas Olyakas announced that parliament intends to adopt an amendment to the Constitution this winter that would remove the ban on the deployment of weapons of mass destruction in the country. According to him, the Seimas’ fall session may be extended until January 13, 2027, for this purpose.

Currently, Article 137 of the Lithuanian Constitution stipulates that neither weapons of mass destruction nor foreign military bases may be located on the country’s territory. Olyakas stated that this provision no longer corresponds to geopolitical reality. He added that the state’s priority in the current situation remains “preserving peace,” for which “deterrence is important.”
