A TV Host Succeeded The World's Youngest Reigning Monarch

The transfer of power took place through coffee beans.

TV host Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma has become the monarch of the Kingdom of Toro in Uganda. Yesterday, September 12, the formal transfer of power took place, according to Reuters.

This took place at the funeral of his predecessor Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Igura Rukidi IV. Kijananagoma tossed nine coffee beans onto his grave, thereby marking the formal transfer of power.

As a reminder, Oyo Rukidi IV, the world’s youngest monarch, who ruled the Kingdom of Toro in western Uganda, died on August 27, 2026. Although Uganda is governed by an elected president and parliament, the country has several traditional kingdoms that, despite lacking political power, exert significant cultural influence. Oyo, who was listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as one of the world’s youngest monarchs, ruled over more than two million people. He was the 13th monarch of the Kingdom of Toro, founded in the early 19th century.

Oyo Rukidi IV became king at the age of just three in 1995 following the death of his father. A regency was then established, which included the queen mother, until Oyo turned 18, after which the official coronation took place.

The decision regarding his successor was made by a selection committee following a search. Kijanangoma, the late king’s cousin, worked as a news anchor and editor at the state-run Uganda Broadcasting Corporation.
