What has happened should serve as a wake-up call for the allies.

Poland and Ukraine have called Russian strike on a passenger train just two kilometers from the Polish border as a new stage of escalation. Warsaw fears that Russian attacks could eventually extend to Polish territory, according to The Guardian.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated in Kyiv that the incident should serve as a wake-up call for allies and lead to a doubling of aid to Ukraine.

“It happened just a few hundred meters from the Polish border; this directly affects the safety of my fellow citizens,” Sikorski said.

The “Kyiv–Warsaw” train was struck near the border, but none of the passengers were injured. Shortly before the attack, a diplomatic train was at the Yagodyn station, carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, and security advisors from several EU countries. Former CIA Director David Petraeus was on a different train.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency meeting in Warsaw following the strike. He warned that Russia could intensify its attacks in the coming weeks.

“We cannot rule out that the escalation will also affect our territory. I hope that does not happen,” Tusk said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the Russian military deliberately attacked the train. According to Ukrainian officials, the strike occurred in the immediate vicinity of the border with Poland.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga called the attack “Putin’s terrorism, which is knocking right on the doors of the EU and NATO.”
