The new Roadster will echo the style of the legendary sports cars of the past.

The new Tesla Roadster electric supercar is equipped with unique headlights hidden behind movable body panels. When the headlights are turned on, the panels lower. This design is reminiscent of technology found in classic sports cars, but differs from the familiar pop-up headlights that rise above the hood, writes Motor1.

Tesla’s chief engineer Lars Moravi and designer Franz von Holzhausen demonstrated how the mechanism works. According to the developers’ concept, the hidden headlights will help keep the front of the car sleek and minimalist. Additionally, this design could potentially improve aerodynamics.

“This is a modern incarnation of a forgotten idea,” writes Motor1.

A similar design has already appeared in automotive history. For example, the 1992 Jaguar XJ220 used a flip-up panel to reveal the headlights. A similar principle is used in the Ferrari Daytona SP3, where movable elements partially cover the headlights.

Classic pop-up headlights disappeared from mass-market automotive production in the early 2000s. One of the reasons was pedestrian safety requirements.

However, it remains unclear whether the Tesla Roadster’s design will remain unchanged in the production version. If the design makes it to production, it will mark yet another attempt to combine futuristic design with automotive traditions.
