On the night of September 15, Ukrainian forces launched a massive attack on the Samara Region of the Russian Federation. The target of the strike in the region was the Syzran Oil Refinery.
The attack caused a fire on the refinery’s grounds. This was reported by the monitoring Telegram channel Exilenova+.
Consequences of the shelling
According to preliminary reports, tanks containing petroleum products are on fire at the Syzran Oil Refinery following the arrival of Ukrainian drones. A huge column of black smoke is rising above the industrial zone.
According to the Russian official, more than 40 drones attacked the Samara Region overnight. The governor confirmed that damage to an industrial facility and residential buildings was reported following the attack.
He also stated that air defense forces and mobile fire groups “repelled the massive strike.” Fedorishchev noted that an operational headquarters is active in the region.
What is known about the facility
The Syzran Oil Refinery is a major city-defining enterprise in the Samara Region of the Russian Federation and is part of the Rosneft group. Its design refining capacity is approximately 8.5–8.9 million metric tons of crude oil per year. The refinery produces motor gasoline (AI-92, AI-95), Euro 5-compliant diesel fuel, fuel oil, jet fuel, and bitumen. On average, the plant produces about 1.5 million metric tons of diesel and 800,000 metric tons of gasoline annually.
It processes West Siberian crude oil, as well as raw materials produced in the Samara region (“Samaraneftegaz”). The Syzran Oil Refinery plays a strategic role in the supply system for Russian occupation forces in several key areas.
The refinery influences the supply of diesel fuel for armored vehicles. The plant produces significant volumes of diesel fuel, meeting the needs of the Central and Southern Military Districts.
The plant also produces jet fuel used to refuel military aircraft (fighters, bombers, and transport aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces).
Due to the plant’s critical importance to the Russian military-industrial complex and logistics, the Syzran Oil Refinery is regularly targeted by Ukrainian UAVs.
