Former CIA Director: The Ukrainian Armed Forces Have Taken The Initiative On The Front Lines

The Russian army failed to accomplish the objectives of the summer campaign.

Former CIA Director David Petraeus believes that the Ukrainian Armed Forces currently hold the initiative in the war between Ukraine and Russia. The four-star general in the U.S. Army made this statement in an interview "RBC-Ukraine".

Petraeus noted that the Russian Federation’s occupying army failed to achieve its objectives during the spring-summer campaign of 2026. The Russian occupiers were not even able to reach the fortified cities in the Donetsk region (namely Kramatorsk and Slavyansk—ed.). At the same time, the Russian army is suffering enormous personnel losses.

The four-star U.S. Army general believes that the Ukrainian Defense Forces currently hold the initiative on the front lines, and that Russia is incapable of achieving its objectives. As for dictator Vladimir Putin’s claims that the Russian army is allegedly making progress, Petreus says this does not correspond to reality.

The former CIA director also noted that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are undergoing a reorganization of their command and control system. This is related to the transition to a corps-level structure and requires additional financial and material resources. In this regard, Petraeus says that Western countries should help Ukraine strengthen its missile defense and provide it with additional funding.
