Some families have already been informed that their loved ones will soon be released.
In Belarus, the next phase of the release of political prisoners began on September 16. This was reported by "Viasna".
According to their information, on the evening of September 15, relatives of some prisoners began receiving calls informing them that they would be able to pick up their loved ones as early as the morning of September 16.
“Pick them up tomorrow morning, September 16.”
“You should come.”
This was also reports the “Zemlya” project of the Belarusian Association of Political Prisoners “DoVoli.”
The project’s authors point out that after several years of imprisonment, families receive only a few terse official statements indicating when they will finally be able to see their loved ones.
“The system is becoming more closed off, but no less repressive. People have been turned into hostages of the regime. Now their fates have become a bargaining chip in political negotiations,” the project’s authors state.
There is currently no official information on the number of people who may be released on September 16 or their names.
As a reminder, on September 15, John Cole arrived in Minsk for talks with Lukashenko. On the eve of his visit, he was in Vilnius, where, during a meeting with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys, they discussed, among other things, the release of Belarusian political prisoners. Cole had previously stated that he expects new releases to take place around mid-September.
