Andy Burnham: Brexit Has Done More Harm Than Good To The United Kingdom

After leaving the EU, the country lost some control over its economy and immigration.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that Brexit has done the country more harm than good, according to the news agency DPA reports.

During a speech at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, Burnham said that the UK must define its long-term relationship with the European Union.

The prime minister noted that later this year he would present options for deepening relations between the UK and the EU. According to him, the country must determine the future direction of cooperation with its largest market.

“I can’t tell you that we’re satisfied with the current situation. Brexit has done us more harm than good,” Bernem said.

He also noted that after leaving the EU, the UK lost some control over its economy and immigration.

Bernam said he would use the upcoming UK–EU summit to present the country with options for long-term relations with its European partners.

According to Bernam, Brexit has not given the UK greater control. He attributed the loss of some control over the economy to a prolonged period of low growth.

“Brexit didn’t give us control. We’ve lost some control over our economy because decades of low growth have left us in a more vulnerable position. And we’ve lost some control over immigration,” the prime minister said.

At the same time, Bernham emphasized the need to settle on one of the options for future relations with the EU, which could provide the UK with greater clarity regarding its position and the future of Europe.

The summit between the UK and the EU, scheduled for July, was postponed following the resignation of Burnam’s predecessor Keir Starmer. A new date for the meeting has not yet been set.
