The U.S. Has Signed A Historic Contract To Develop A Sixth-generation Fighter Jet

More than $20 billion will be allocated for the development of the latest fighter jet.
The U.S. Navy has awarded Boeing a contract worth more than $20 billion to develop the sixth-generation carrier-based fighter, the F/A-XX. This was reported by reported by the U.S. Department of Defense.
“The Department of Defense announced the signing of a contract between the U.S. Navy and Boeing to develop the sixth-generation F/A-XX strike fighter as part of the Next-Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program. The contract value for the full-scale development phase exceeds $20 billion,” the Department of Defense wrote on its website.
The contract calls for the procurement of several aircraft for testing. Starting in the 2030s, the new fighter is expected to replace the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and the EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft. It is also expected to operate alongside the fifth-generation F-35C.
The signing of the contract marks an era of Boeing’s undisputed dominance in the development of fighter jets for the U.S. Armed Forces. Previously, the company was selected to develop another next-generation aircraft—the F-47, intended for the U.S. Air Force.
Most recently, Boeing competed against Northrop Grumman in the F/A-XX development competition. Another participant was Lockheed Martin; however, that company withdrew from the competition back in 2025.
The F/A-XX is expected to have an extended range to project power from U.S. aircraft carriers over long distances. The F/A-XX will be developed not simply as a standalone manned fighter, but as part of a large-scale combat network. The aircraft will be capable of interacting with both manned and unmanned platforms.
The official specifications of the F/A-XX are classified. At the same time, the program’s concept calls for equipping the aircraft with the latest hypersonic missiles, storing weapons in internal bays to reduce visibility, and possible integration with laser systems.
