A Woman From Minsk: I Haven't Been Able To Find A Job For Four Months

"They won't even hire a simple accountant."
A woman from Minsk, annastasj, shared her experience trying to find a job.
“Finding a job in Minsk is a nightmare,” she writes. “At least for me. I quit a job where I’d worked for three years, and four months later, I still can’t find a steady, decent job. I tried working at a couple of companies; the first one was a quiet nightmare—I only lasted a month and a half there—and I wrote about the second one below.
I was always looking for work day in and day out, constantly keeping my finger on the pulse. It seems like I’m the kind of person who’s ready to just work my butt off and do anything, as long as I get paid. But, alas.”
Many Belarusians supported the author of the post and shared their own experiences looking for work. The website Charter97.org features some of these comments:
- I haven’t quit my job yet, but I’m actively looking. And it seems like I have everything—both experience and motivation. But, alas… Job openings are created just to meet the requirements for posting them. In reality, no one is actually needed. Or what’s written in the ad doesn’t match reality during the interview. And I don’t have any special demands or expectations. A real mess, in a word.
- Yeah, I’m in the same boat. It’s been four months without a job. There’s nothing to do in Belarus; if I don’t find anything, I’ll go work on a rotation in another country. Maybe I’ll stay there.
- Same old nonsense—I’ve been looking for more than four months now. It’s a disaster. I’m already losing hope. Where can I go to work at 48? I’ve devoted my whole life and health to accounting. And now they say: “You’re too old.” How can that be? They won’t even hire me as a regular accountant. Who can I turn to? Why did they bring in all that riffraff to our country, while we, the citizens of Belarus, have nowhere to go? What’s going on?
