Ukraine Has Found A Way To Break Through Russian Defenses

The new tactics make it possible to conduct offensive operations in an environment dominated by drones.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s hopes of seizing the entire Donbas region have been seriously undermined by a groundbreaking Ukrainian offensive that has wiped out all the territorial gains the Russians had made over more than a year of fighting.

As reported by Atlantic Council, this success demonstrated the tactical innovations of the Ukrainian military and their high level of proficiency in combat operations using drones. It is noted that some of the fiercest battles since the start of the invasion are currently taking place in the Lyman sector, as Putin seeks to achieve his minimum military objective—to capture the entire Donbas. However, the success of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has thwarted these plans.

It is noted that the element of surprise was a key factor. The Ukrainian military created an “electronic warfare (EW) screen” that prevented Russian reconnaissance drones from penetrating key areas of the front line while simultaneously concealing the movements of Ukrainian troops.

“With Russia’s ability to conduct battlefield reconnaissance significantly limited, Ukraine was able to deploy large bomber drones to deliver unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) deep into enemy territory. These remotely controlled robots, equipped with heavy machine guns or packed with explosives, wreaked havoc deep in Russian rear areas and created conditions for the advance of infantry. Russian troops were caught off guard: in one of the intercepted conversations, an officer expressed extreme surprise that Ukrainian robots had managed to penetrate so deep into the rear,” the publication wrote.

In addition, the Ukrainian Armed Forces actively used medium-range strike drones to isolate specific Russian units and cut off supply routes to forward positions.

The publication added that, in addition to operations laying the groundwork for an offensive behind Russian lines, Ukrainian forces used ground-based unmanned aerial vehicles for demining, clearing passages, and preparing a foothold for further advancement. “This helped save the lives of soldiers,” the publication noted.

“If the experience gained in the Lyman sector can be scaled up and implemented across the entire Ukrainian army, it could serve as a model for Ukraine to restore maneuver warfare on battlefields dominated by drones,” the publication believes.
