One Border Checkpoint On The Border With Russia Was Closed Unexpectedly In Estonia

Because of illegal immigrants.

Estonian border guards closed the “Luhamaa” border crossing on the border with Russia early on Sunday due to illegal migrants who were persistently attempting to enter Estonia without documents, according to ERR.

The Southern Prefecture of the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board announced that on the evening of September 6, the Luhamaa border crossing closed earlier than usual due to two undocumented migrants—a man and a woman.

“Two Iranian citizens persistently attempted to cross the border into Estonia from Russia via the Luhamaa border crossing. However, they had no legal grounds to cross the border, as both had destroyed their documents after arriving from Russia,” the agency reported.

Estonian border guards sent them back toward Russia and notified the Russian side. The Iranians did not give up and returned to the Estonian border crossing point, after which officials decided to close the checkpoint earlier than scheduled.

“The checkpoint will remain closed until the Russian Federation resolves the situation on its end,” the statement added.
