US call upon UN to condemn Lukashenka’s regime

US delegation has offered the UN member states to condemn the situation with human rights in Belarus. A draft resolution has been proposed for attention of the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly. It is stated in the draft resolution that systematic human rights violations, crackdown on mass media, opposition and human rights activists are continuing in our country.

“UN General Assembly expresses deep concern over continuing use of criminal prosecution system in Belarus for silencing political opposition and human rights activists, in the form of arbitrary arrests, disrespect to procedural due process of law, politically motivated trials over leading oppositionists and human rights activists held behind closed doors,” the draft resolution reads.

It is underlined in the draft resolution that Belarusian regime hasn’t reacted to criticism of the international community concerning violations during presidential elections in 2006, and has failed to fulfill its international commitments to hold free and fair elections to local authorities in January 2007.

The draft resolution draws attention to the practice of depriving NGOs of “a possibility to function; crackdowns and arrests of Belarusian journalists and temporary ban on activities of independent mass media”.
