US Congressmen demand release Zeltser from Belarusian prison

2

A group of influential US lawmakers has sent a letter to the Belarusian government today with a call to release the US citizen Emanuel Zeltser who is serving three-year term in Belarus.

The letter was signed by the chairman and a few members of the US House of Representatives’ Committee on Foreign Affairs (European sub-committee), leaders of the US Congress Helsinki and Human Rights commissions. The request to release is motivated by “humanitarian grounds” considering Zeltser’s state of health, PRIME-TASS informs.

In August Zeltser was sentenced to three years of imprisonment in a standard regime penal colony for commercial espionage and forgery of documents. In the end of October the Supreme Court of Belarus re-examined the case and upheld the verdict.
