European Union insists on unconditional release of Kazulin

5

The High Representative of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) of the EU Javier Solana urged the Belarusian authorities to release Alyaksandr Kazulin immediately. It is stated in a document at the official website of the EU.

Javier Solana noted that he met the news about the untimely death of Iryna Kazulina with great sorrow, and expressed his condolences to her husband and daughters.

As said by Javier Solana, release of A. Kazulin would mean release of all political prisoners, five of which have been already released.

He said he sincerely hopes the regime would make this step, the EU representative said.

According to previous reports, A. Kazulin has been given three days of freedom to attend the funeral of his wife.

Authorities in Belarus will allow a jailed opposition leader to attend his wife's funeral, his lawyer said Tuesday, after their initial refusal triggered international pressure for his temporary release.

Authorities gave Alexander Kozulin three days to attend the funeral of his wife, Irina Kozulina, who died of cancer on Saturday, said lawyer Igor Rynkevich.

The United States and European Union demanded in the days leading up to and after Kozulin's wife's death that he be set free.
