1

Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, chairman of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, and other members of the committee offered condolences to Alyaksandr Kazulin’s family on the death of the politician’s wife, Iryna.\

In a statement issued on February 25, Mr. Saryusz-Wolski expressed “deep sadness” about the death, the European Parliament’s press office said.

“We are all appalled to hear that the Belarusian authorities refuse to allow Mr. Kazulin to attend the funeral of his wife, the European Parliament's former guest and speaker,” the European Parliament member said.

Dr. Kazulin was granted bereavement leave for three days hours after the statement was issued.

The Committee’s members urged the Belarusian government to release the opposition politician from prison “completely.”
