BPF Party candidates registration under threat

3

A head of the department of public organisations at the Directorate for Public Organisations of the Ministry of Justice brought a letter to the office of the Belarusian Popular Front Party on 19 August saying to file original documents of nomination an MP candidate or certified copies of them to the Ministry of Justice on 20 August.

As lawyer Uladzimir Labkovich thinks, such demands of the Ministry of Justice are unlawful: “The Law on Political Parties provides a term of 10 days for filing documents to the Ministry of Justice, and article 38 of the Election Code provides a term of 3 days to give information on request of district election commissions.”

The lawyer notes that if the documents are not presented at the term determined by the Ministry of Justice, four BPF candidates, nominated by the party congress on 9 August, may be not registered.
