Syarhei Pankouski: “Kazulin may return to prison at any moment”

4

“I personally highly appreciate the decision of the Belarusian authorities on releasing political prisoners. It was absolutely immoral to keep them in prisons,” Belarusian politologist Syarhei Pankouski thinks.

“Foundation of the Belarusian regime remains secure. Release of political prisoners “cosmetic” steps, which are positive, but don’t change the character of the political regime. I don’t believe Lukashenka will initiate reforming of the current political system,” the politologist says.

In his view, the authorities were pressed to release of political prisoners, “it was seen clearly”.

“There is a line the official Minsk won’t cross. Our authorities won’t allow appearing of fair political competition in the country, it will contradict the system existing in the state. The essence of the Belarusian regime is in its unwillingness to improve itself.

There are no free court and freedom of speech in Belarus. Until there are no reforms in these spheres, freedom of Kazulin (and any other politically active person) can’t be guaranteed in our country. We live under the political regime that can make Kazulin return to prison at any moment,” Syarhei Pankouski said.
