Andrey Mezin of Team Belarus named best goalie of world hockey championship

Andrey Mezin of Team Belarus was named the best goaltender of the World Ice Hockey Championship that drew to a close in Switzerland on May 10.

The 34-year-old was named the best goaltender by the tournament’s directorate and also made the six-player all-star team chosen by journalists.

The Russian-born Mezin had the tournament’s second-highest save percentage of 94.8 percent, behind only Canada’s Chris Mason with 96.5 percent.

The goaltender played in five of Belarus’ seven games at the tournament, featuring in four wins and only one defeat.

Team Belarus proved the most disciplined team at the championship with only 68 penalty minutes, or an average of 9.71 minutes per game.

The Belarusian team finished eighth at the tournament, losing to champions Russia 4-3 in a quarterfinal game. The squad recorded four victories, including shootout wins over Slovakia and Finland, and three losses.
