Poet Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu, the leader of “Say the Truth!” campaign, was detained at night May 19, after his apartment had been searched.

The poet spent the night in the Leninski district militia department, Radio Svaboda learnt from his wife Volha. Interrogation of Nyaklyaeu goes on today at 9 in the morning.

Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu was detained after the search in his apartment. He asked the investigators who were taking him to the militia department why he had to be interrogated at night if the law prescribes to do this at daytime.

“Two computers, USB flash drives, CDs, notebooks, papers, all things on the table were seized during the search,” Volha Nyaklyaeva said. “Uladzimir keeps his text written for the last seven years on the flash drives. The militiaman on duty said he would be kept in the militia department till the morning then interrogated and then taken to a jail in Akrestsin Street.”

We remind that the criminal case is initiated by the Leninski district militia department of Minsk under article 250 of the Criminal Code of Belarus (dissemination of false information about goods and services). In connection with the criminal case, activists of the “Say the Truth!” civil campaign were searched all over the country on May 18. Dozens of activists were questioned; computers and printed materials were seized from their apartments and offices. It is still unclear how materials of the “Say the Truth!” campaign relate to the criminal case.

Editor of “Tovarishch” newspaper Syarhei Vaznyak and activist of the United Civil Party Andrei Dzmitryeu were detained after interrogations.

Nyaklyaeu’s fellows hold a press conference at 12:00 in the BPF party office.
