Syarhei Kavalenka’s wife detained for leaflets in her husband’s support

Syarhei Kavalenka’s wife detained for leaflets in her husband’s support

It happened at about 9 p.m. on January 25.

Her relative Krystsina, the wife of Syarhei Kavalenka’s full brother, was taken to the police department of Pershamajski district with her, Radio Svaboda informs.

Vitaly Kavalenka, a brother of the political prisoner, told that the both women were detained as they disseminated leaflets with information about Syarhei who is kept in the remand prison.

“There was a Christmas tree with a white-red-white flag on the top depicted on these leaflets. On January 7, 2010 Syarhei placed a flag of the top of the tree. There was his portrait there as well, accompanied by information that he is in prison, and since December 19 he is on a hunger strike protesting against criminal charges and forcible feeding him through a gastric tube. It was also written there that Syarhei’s family with two little children is left without means of support.”

It is not the first time leaflets in support of Syarhei Kavalenka appear in Vitsebsk. On January 12 Pyotr Ivanou was detained for distribution of leaflets and was invited to the administrative process in Kavalenka’s case. But in the minutes of the court session another reason was written down: the activist of “Tell the Truth!” campaign used gross language.

Kavalenka is kept in the remand prison of Vitsebsk though the investigation in the case opened under Article 415 has been finished already. The activist is charged with violation of the rules of serving punishment, “home correctional term”, a conditional sentence for hanging a white-red-white flag on the Christmas tree.
