Mikalai Statkevich: “Don't be afraid! Everything will be fine!”

19

Maryna Adamovich, the wife of the political prisoner, visited him in prison yesterday.

She wrote about the visit on Facebook.

“I've seen Mikalai today. He is wonderful! He wishes Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone and asks to say “Don't be afraid. Everything will be fine!” she wrote.

The visit lasted two hours. Statkevich and his wife talked on the phone through bars and a glass barrier.

“I used the right to a visit on the same day I received it. Mikalai hasn't changed for three years behind bars. The same smile, bright clever eyes, accurate and felicitous remarks. He wishes Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone. He wishes good changes and asks not to be afraid,” the woman said.

Mikalai Statkevich ran in the 2010 presidential elections. He was arrested after mass protests against the fraudulent elections.

On May 26, 2011, Minsk's Maskouski district court sentenced him to 6 years in a medium security correctional facility.

On January 12, 2012, a court strengthened confinement conditions for him, He was transferred from correctional colony No. 17 in Shklou to prison No. 4 in Mahilou.

Statkekevich is often thrown into a punishment cell. He has restrictions regarding visits and parcels. Prison officers organise provocations against him on the order of the authorities.
