Lukashenka dismisses KGB deputy chief Vyahera

The deputy head of the KGB, Viktar Vyahera, has been dismissed.

Major General Viktar Vyahera has been relieved of his duties as first deputy head of the State Security Committee (KGB) of the Republic of Belarus responsible for counter-intelligence and transferred to the reserve over age with the right to wear military uniform and rank insignia.

The relevant decree was signed by Alyaksandr Lukashenka on April 1, the presidential press service informs.

KGB deputy chief Viktar Vyahera was in charge of a number of high-profile cases, including the Minsk metro blast of 11 April 2011 and the case against Viasna human rights centre leader Ales Byalyatski.

He is banned from entering the EU and the US.
