'Leanid Marakou Restored Memory On 20 Thousand Belarusians'
LEANID MARAKOU

The anniversary of the man who abandoned his business to search for the truth about the Stalin repression was marked in Minsk.

Leanid Marakou, the researcher of the Stalin repression, would have turned 60 soon. The people honoured his memory in the Maksim Bahdanovich Museum in Minsk last night, Radio Racyja reports.

Chairman of the Union of Belarusian Writers Barys Piatrovich says:

- His first book appeared a kind of a detective story about the "Maladniak", about Valer Marakou, about the 30s. After that, he began to closely deal with the history of repression. First there was a book about writers who were repressed, then there were books about repressed doctors, priests, other people. In general, experts have calculated that he returned to use at least 20 thousand names of citizens of Belarus, who were repressed in the 30s.

The researcher's uncle Valer Marakou was one of the repressed writers. The awareness of this relationship made Leanid Marakou abandon a successful business and get engaged in the research activities.
